Little House on the Prairie - Near Independence, Kansas The Ingalls family arrived in Rutland Township, Montgomery County, Kansas in 1869 after a short stay in Chariton County, Missouri. The Ingalls' did not realize the land they chose for their home was in Osage Indian territory. The Osage were upset that so many White settlers were crowding onto their land and were close to declaring war on the settlers. Independence was the setting for Laura's book "Little House on the Prairie"®. Laura wrote about the sounds of the Indian war whoop and drums pounding throughout the night. Hand dug well by Charles Ingalls at LHOP site Most of Laura's stories in LHOP came from stories told by her family members. Laura was around 2 years old during the stay in Kansas, too young to remember these stories first hand. Regardless, the stories are great and factual.
